Our Staff & Their Thoughts: If You Could Do It All Again…

The majority of FirstPoint USA staff have been on soccer scholarships to America, but what if they had a chance to do it all again? We decided to set up some questions for our staff, to ask them if they could go out to The States again to play a different sport, what sport would they choose? They also chose their ideal state and ideal university. For a lot of the answers it showed that some of the guys fancied playing golf in sunny California, or being big, tough, American footballers (all clearly dreams!) Have a look at what the staff did, where they originally studied, and what they would do now if they could do it all over again, playing a different sport…

Being a College Soccer Coach

We recently caught up with FirstPoint USA sports consultant Andy McNab to get an insight into his experiences coaching college soccer in the U.S.  Andy is a former FirstPoint USA soccer scholarship recipient who both played for, and coached Salem University teams.

football coaching | firstpoint usa

1. Hi Andy, when did you first become interested in coaching?

Throughout my time in the USA, I got involved with the youth coaching set up within West Virginia. I really enjoyed that aspect of my life out there, so when the opportunity to coach at college level came around I jumped at it!

2. What is your coaching background?

  • Salem International University- Graduate Assistant Men’s Coach  (2008-2009)
  • Greenville College – Assistant Men’s and Women’s Coach (2009-2010)
  • Salem International University – Head Women’s Coach (2010-2012)

3. How exactly did you fall into it?

During my last year, I spoke with my coach about my future and he offered me the chance to be his assistant, so that worked out nice!

4. Can you describe a typical day in the life of a coach?

Everyday is different! In pre-season it’s up at 5 for a 6am practice and then getting home later after 3 or 4 training sessions.  There is always recruiting going on, either on the phone or going to watch matches, it really is a 24/7job!

5. What was you biggest coaching achievement?

Getting that first win is always a great moment, but my job was more to rebuild the whole women’s program, so knowing I left it in better shape than I got it was a great thing. Going to nationals with Greenville’s Men’s team was great experience, and also working with such people as Caleb Porter (New Portland Timbers coach and U23 USA National Coach) was a great experience.

6. Do you think you would have had the same coaching opportunities in the UK?

Not to the same standard anyway. Being a coach at the college level is a lot of people’s dream job, and it was fantastic experience.

7. How can a sports scholarship to the USA help with becoming a coach?

It’s a necessity to me. Even to start being a part of the whole system, to understand the day to day life of being a student athlete. I think that is half the battle of being a college coach, as you have to understand what your players are going through every day. It also allows you to network while you play, and there is a lot of opportunity to coach.

8. What advice do you have for anyone who is considering a future in soccer coaching?

Get into the youth coaching as soon as you can. It gives you the experience coaching in America and how recruiting is done, as coaches will be looking at your players. From the people you meet then makes connections for that potential job!

Nicole and Barry’s Comments

FirstPoint USA’s Nicole and Barry had the following to say about their time at Binghamton, playing soccer for the University.

Binghamton | FirstPoint USA

“Binghamton was our home for four years and we would not have changed it
for the world. We both had incredible experiences on and off the pitch.
We both had traveled around 3,000 miles to get to Binghamton every
year. Homesickness was natural and bound to happen, but the school
really do provide all the support and help you need…FOR ANYTHING.

As an athlete our experience was totally different than the average
student. We would be required to balance everything in our life from
training, to our coursework, road games, missing classes, our social
life – ultimately needing to succeed in the classroom and on the pitch
every single day.

Binghamton | FirstPoint USA

Binghamton is regarded as one of the top academic institutions in the
northeast of the country. Major firms from New York city regularly
recruit graduates to work in their offices upon graduation. Binghamton
University is regularly recognized for their outstanding academic
success and is mentioned in the ‘Princeton Review’ and ‘U.S. News & World
Report’

Binghamton will always have a special place in our hearts for many
reasons. The University and athletics program in particular really drill
their values into you and it becomes part of who you are. No matter what
we do or where go, we will always be Binghamton Bearcats for life!”

Scott Murray

Congratulations to Scott Murray who has secured a Soccer Scholarship to Jamestown College in Central North Dakota.

Scott’s personal Sports Consultant from FirstPoint USA, Simone Enrici, requested a special mention of Scott on our blog, after being so impressed with his attitude and maturity.

Simone said of Scott :

Scott has been a joy to work with at FPUSA.

He was actually studying away from his home town in Australia, working on a B-Tech in England. He decided his future was in the US.  He came on board with the FirstPointUSA program where he had to do a lot of this process on his own shoulders; including traveling to his assessment, interview at Stamford Bridge, two SAT exams and various client matches to build his personal footage.

I believe Scott has a very promising future in the US, his overall attitude and commitment will prove a great value to any college in America.

Scott Murray signed his scholarship earlier this month with Jamestown college. He flies out tomorrow to begin his scholarship experience.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Scott and his father, Tony for all their hard work and wish them all the very best!

Congratulations Scott, we all wish you well for your time in the United States.

Good Luck to you and to all of our talented young athletes setting off to the U.S over the forthcoming days and weeks!
