FirstPoint USA to Sponsor SGU Boys Events
2-Year commitment to the U16 & U18 National Events

Leading sports scholarship consultancy First Point USA have been confirmed as sponsors of two of the Scottish Golf Union’s events in an exciting new partnership for junior golf in Scotland.

First Point USA will become title sponsors of the Scottish Boys U16s Championship, taking place at Glen GC (8 – 10 July) as well as the Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship which will be played over the Lansdowne course at Blairgowrie GC from the 22nd to 24th July.

The company will also support the Scottish Golf Union and ambitious young golfers in Scotland with advice on sports scholarships using First Point USA’s knowledge, expertise and experience of the university industry gained during the seven years since they were launched in 2001.

Several of Scotland’s current men’s amateur squad have worked with First Point USA during the process of deciding which university to pursue their sporting and academic careers, including current Scottish Golfer of the Year Callum Macaulay, former Scottish Amateur Champion Kevin McAlpine and Gavin Dear. Englishman Daniel Willet, the world’s number one ranked amateur earlier this year, was also a client of First Point USA until turning professional last month.

Managing Director Andrew Kean, a product of the US scholarship himself, is delighted to be supporting junior golf in Scotland with their new sponsorship agreement:

“The Scottish Golf Union does a fantastic job in developing talent and staging high quality events for junior golfers in Scotland. We are delighted to be working in partnership with the SGU and supporting the future ambassadors of the game.”

“Our role is to provide the best support and advice to young sportsmen and women who are looking to pursue a scholarship, whether that is recommending staying in Scotland or choosing one of the top universities in the States. First Point USA has a wealth of knowledge of the US scholarship system and we have been successful in placing many of the UK’s top golfers.” added Kean.

The partnership provides a significant boost to the SGU’s event sponsorship income over the next two years for two of its highest profile junior championships. Last year’s Boys Stroke Play was won by James Byrne, who has just completed his first year at Arizona State University. Other former winners include Lloyd Saltman and Stephen Gallacher.

The Boys U16s Championship, hosted at the scenic Glen GC in North Berwick in three weeks time, boasts rising European Tour star Peter Whiteford as one of its former winners and welcomes 120 competitors to East Lothian with a handicap ballot of 5.6 thus year.

Hamish Grey, Chief Executive of the SGU, welcomed the new partnership:

“First Point USA is another great sponsorship acquisition for the SGU further highlighting our appeal to businesses in Scotland. They already work closely with many of our young golfers and we welcome their investment back into the game at junior level.”

“They will provide a valuable insight into the US scholarship system, a route which many golfers are taking, which will help us build relationships with the universities chosen by those players who opt to pursue their careers in the USA.”
