To the student-athlete:

 

The benefit for the student-athlete in attending an American university is gaining an education to degree level – wholly or partly paid for – the life experience in the United States, plus good coaching and performance opportunities.

 

Currently the full cost of going to the US without a scholarship could be up to $60,000 per year.

 

It is unlikely that many of FirstPoint USA’s clients could afford to fund that level of cost without the financial support that a scholarship provides.

 

To the American college & university:

 

The benefit for the university is that they get a student-athlete who will help them achieve sporting success, which is highly valued in America and, in turn, helps to generate revenues for the university.

 

International student-athletes add value in terms of their varied experience competing in their native country. There are many cultural attributes that international student-athletes add to an American college sports team.

 

The universities call for students to maintain academic achievement alongside sporting achievement and typically require students to maintain at least a ‘C’ grade average during their scholarship. The system is based on academic achievement at its heart; it is always emphasised that ‘student athletes’ come in that order – student first, then athlete.
