NCAA college athletes collected 44 Olympic medals during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing

  • At the last Olympic Games in Beijing, Stanford University had over 46 student-athletes competing for medals.
  • This is closely followed by the University of Southern California and the University of California – Berkeley who had 41 of their student-athletes competing respectively.
  • The University of Florida swimming program had 19 of its swimmers represent 15 different countries during the Olympics.
  • The University of Southern California has won a gold medal in every Olympics since 1912 and won 21 medals in Beijing.
  • If the University of Southern California were a nation, its 21 medals in Beijing would rank 13th in the world and tied for eighth in gold. That's well ahead of running powerhouses such as Kenya (14 overall) and Jamaica (11). India, with more than 1 billion citizens, won three medals. South Africa, with 142 athletes, took home only one.
