Scotland Win World Team Championships

Two former FirstPoint USA golfers lead the way as Scotland are named the new World Amateur Team Champions, having clinched a stunning victory in the Eisenhower Trophy at the Royal Adelaide GC in Australia yesterday.

With two former FirstPoint USA clients leading the way, the Scottish trio of Callum Macaulay (Tulliallan), Wallace Booth (Comrie) and Gavin Dear (Murrayshall) finished nine shots clear of the closest challengers from the USA with a 20-under par aggregate of 560 to clinch the trophy in its fiftieth anniversary year.

With Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren lifting the World Cup of Golf in China last November, Scotland are now world champions in both the amateur and professional game.

“We set out to win from the start but to go out and do it is unbelievable,” said an ecstatic Macaulay, who also finished runner-up in the individual tournament with an eight-under par four-round aggregate of 282.

Going into the final round with a four-shot advantage over the USA, the Scots revelled in the testing windy conditions, with Macaulay producing a one-under par 71 and team-mate Gavin Dear posting a two-over par 75, including a spectacular eagle at the 17th which effectively clinched his side’s win.

A delighted team captain George Crawford admitted:

“We were obviously in a strong position after the third round but I couldn’t relax until Gavin chipped in for eagle at the seventeenth and Callum followed him in with a birdie. It’s history in the making for a small nation and a special moment for the Home of Golf.”

“The way golf has developed on the continent means it’s much more difficult to compete at this level. We had a great team spirit with the three lads here this week and they deserve all the plaudits for the hard work they’ve put in all season.” added Crawford, who bows out as team captain on a spectacular high.

It was a real team effort throughout the event for the Scots, with all three players contributing significantly to the low scoring. Scottish Stroke Play Champion Booth was under par for three of the four rounds, whilst Dear matched Macaulay in producing three counting scores, with the best two from the three players counting each day.

Scotland have only being competing as a separate nation in the Eisenhower Trophy for eight years, with Great Britain & Ireland competing in the event up until 2000, winning on four occasions. The Scots best previous finish was sixth place two years ago in South Africa.
