Sam Strachan Tops Field in NCAA DI Event

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Former FirstPoint USA golfer and Alabama State freshman Sam Strachan outlasted Tennessee State’s Chris Siebel through three playoff holes in capturing the ASU Fall Classic (Division I) medalist honor Tuesday at Lagoon Park Golf Course. The Hornets finished second in the Division I team competition.
A native of Carinbulg, Scotland, Strachan finished with a 36-hole total of one-under-par 143 (71-72) en route to earning the individual title in his collegiate debut.
The Hornets carded rounds of 287-298=585 in taking runner-up honors.
“Sam played solid for us both days,” said ASU head coach Gary Grandison. “He is a golfer that we brought in to help us get over the hump and he played well for us this week. In spite of finishing under par, Sam knows that he left some strokes out on the course. I’m proud of the team for breaking both our 18-hole and 36-hole low rounds. We continue to grow and improve as a team and that is exciting to see.”
Senior Kyle Demeester shot a 145 (69-76) in finishing fourth followed by teammates John Montgomery (72-77=149) and Michael Stringfellow (76-73=149) in a tie for eighth place. Brendan Prouse rounded out the Hornets lineup with a 13th-place finish of 154 (75-79). A pair of Hornets participated as individuals with Gregory Keafer finishing 12th (78-75=153) and La Shaye Chancey in 30th (117-124=241).
Tennessee State was the Division I flight champion after shooting a tournament total 580. Savannah State finished third at 625 followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff (643), Alabama A&M (662) and Southern (668).
In the A-Division competition, Birmingham-Southern captured the team title with a two-day score 581 with Spring Hill College finishing runner-up at 583. Faulkner University’s “A” squad was third at 888 followed by Morehouse (589), Mobile (590), Faulkner “B” (612), Spring Hill College JV (631), Talladega College (663) and Baptist College (676). BSC’s Nick Blakely earned the A-Division medalist award with a tournament-low 140 total.
