So you’re interested in playing Field Hockey in the States? Athletes talented in both their skills and academics are likely to gain coveted scholarship awards at Universities and colleges. This allows the athlete to take part in collegiate, intercollegiate matches and national championships. Currently only female athletes are able to gain field hockey scholarships.
When is the best time?
The best time for you to go to America on a sports scholarship is straight from school or up to a few years after. Only athletes ages 18 – 24 can compete within the college leagues, any older and you will be looking at competing in the NAIA. However, we can start working with athletes and getting them up to speed from the age of 15. Coaches are increasingly interested in working with younger athletes as this gives them the opportunity to work with athletes for longer.
In terms of how long you can be out there for, it depends whether you would like to seek a bachelor’s degree from your time there. Normally you can be part of the university or college for anywhere between 1-4 years. By going to America as early as possible this gives you the best chance of gaining a sports scholarship and turning professional after college.
How good do you have to be?
It all depends on your ability and academics. For good field hockey players on the level of Division I, the chances to receive a full scholarship are relatively high if you know where there are vacancies and who to contact.
One of the best pieces of advice we can give you is to practice and compete as often as you can in your local area prior to starting U.S College. This shows college coaches that you are passionate and able to compete at a high level.
If you are competing at a national level then you have a greater chance of receiving a 100% sports scholarship. Coaches will look at an athlete’s potential – they know from experience that even moderate athletic performance can be boosted immensely with their intensive training methods. A college recruitment coach will also look at your CV, your photographs, videos and our staff’s advice regarding your ability.
