For Men’s golf, the leading DI programs will be recruiting players with an average score of 72 and lower. For the top DII, DIII and NAIA programs, coaches are looking for players who average 74 or lower. For a mid-tier DII program, you would need to be scoring an average 76 or lower, while there is more flexibility at lower level DIII and NAIA programs, which can range from high 70s to low 80s.

For Women’s golf, the leading DI programs will be recruiting players with an average score of 75 and lower. For the top DII programs, coaches are looking for players who average 80 or lower. For a DIII or NAIA women’s golf program, the average scoring range will range from 80 and below up to 95.

Often the best way to showcase your golfing ability is to send college coaches a swing video compilation. Many coaches won’t have the budget to travel to international tournaments, so some highlights showing different aspects of your game can be a great way of communicating with a coach. A good highlights video will show a wide variety of swings with different clubs and scenarios, such as driving, fairway wood, long iron, mid iron, short iron, pitching, bunker play and different lengths of putting.

The standard of player on the leading DI programs is extremely high, with many of the best players now quickly progressing onto the main professional tours. Candidates should be competing at national and regional/county level, demonstrating success through wins and high finishes, and earning WAGR points. Factors such as swing speed, ball striking ability, and mental toughness are also considered. D1 college golf represents the pinnacle of amateur golf in the United States.
