Frequently Asked Questions
There are now over 900 college rugby programs in the US for men and women, and rugby is the fastest growing college sport in the country. FirstPoint USA has an extensive network of coaches across all levels of college rugby, working closely with programs in each of the governing bodies – National Collegiate Rugby, NIRA (women’s rugby) and USA Rugby (CRAA). Teams compete in different divisions in both 15s and 7s.
For international players, rugby scholarships offer a fantastic opportunity to combine high-level athletic competition with quality education. Unlike NCAA sports with strict regulations, rugby scholarships are generally administered directly by individual universities or through athletic endowments and fundraising efforts.
Universities offering rugby scholarships will assess both the academic qualifications and the rugby playing ability of prospective student-athletes. Strong grades and impressive playing footage or references from coaches are crucial.
Scholarship amounts can vary significantly, ranging from partial scholarships covering a portion of tuition and fees to full scholarships that encompass most or all costs, including accommodation and living expenses.
While not governed by the NCAA, individual universities and the organizing bodies (CRAA and NCR) may have their own eligibility rules regarding academic standing and amateur status.
We’ve been helping potential rugby stars of the future secure college rugby placements for many years now. Our consultants will help you to understand how to apply, what tests you need to complete (academic and physical). We have worked with players at different levels of the game, from pro club academies and international age group players to those playing at club and school level. Our role is to find the level that is a best fit for you.
If you are successful in securing a college rugby placement, you will be expected to practice and train with your team for up to 3-5 hours daily, five days a week. Training includes skills drills, fitness work, strength and conditioning exercises, set piece plays and match preparation. The training schedule can be challenging, particularly when combined with the academic demands of being a student-athlete, but you will benefit from the program’s support team and excellent athletic facilities.
