Super bowl Fever

With many people catching the Super bowl fever this week, we thought it would be useful to those who maybe havn't been following it to find out more about this beloved American institution! The NFL Super bowl is one of the most anticipated events in the American sporting calendar.  There are millions of people from all over the world who never follow this game but who tune in for the big game.  This week saw the New York Giants take the victory over the New England Patriots in a 17 to 21 defeat. The media writes that Tom Brady’s two long failures in the final minutes and several other glitches were what cost the New England Patriots the game. However, the Super bowl does not bring in the viewers with football alone.  This event is an entertainment extravaganza, with advertisers battling it out to get a spot in the half time breaks.  This year, companies would have had to invest $4 million to get a spot for their TV commercial!  Another highly anticipated part of the Super bowl, is the celebrity entertainers - and the performance of the National Anthem.  This year, Kelly Clarkson had this honor, but was accompanied with performances by Madonna and M.I.A. All in all, the Super bowl is a true reflection of the American Dream - sports, celebrities, entertainment, beer, food, families and commercials! Roman Numerals - Each Super Bowls is represented by a roman numeral. There have only been three Super Bowls with a single numeral - Super Bowls One, Five, and Ten (I, V, and X). The next single numeral game is Super Bowl 50 (L) in the year 2016. The following wont be until Super Bowl 100 (C) in 2066. Commercial Costs- In 1967 during the first Super Bowl, a 30-second television commercial cost $42,000. The arena is scheduled to host the Bowl for the seventh time in 2013. Viewers - It is the 2nd most watched sporting event in the world. More than 100 million people worldwide watch the Super Bowl every year. In fact, Super Bowl XLIV in 2010 unseated M*A*S*H's series finale as the most watched show in television history with over 106.5 million watchers. Of the top 10 most watched American television programs of all time, nine of them are Super Bowls. Super Bowl Coaches - Don Shula (Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins) has served as the head coach in more Super Bowls (six) than any other coach. Chuck Noll (Pittsburg Steelers) with four titles has the most wins for a coach.  There have been hundreds of people throughout the years who have won Super Bowls. And of those players, quite a few have gone on to be coaches. But did you know that out of that group, only three (Mike Ditka, Tom Flores and Tony Dungy) have won the Super Bowl as both player and coach? Conditions - The NFL has a policy against holding Super Bowl games in stadiums that have a climate of less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit, unless it is an enclosed stadium. Longest Run : The longest run in a Super Bowl was 100 yards after an interception by Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison during Super Bowl XLIII. (Formerly 75 yards by Willie Parker during Super Bowl XL) Food : The National Chicken Council(NCC) says that Super Bowl weekend is the biggest time of the year for wings. More than 1.25 billion wing portions will be consumed during Super Bowl weekend in 2012, totaling more than 100 million pounds of wings, according to the NCC’s 2012 Wing Report.  If you feel a little bloated the day after the Super Bowl, it’s understandable. In America, Super Bowl Sunday is second in food consumption behind only Thanksgiving Day. How much food is gobbled down? How about an estimated 14,500 tons of chips, 4,000 tons of popcorn and 8 million pounds of guacamole? Is it any wonder so many people call in sick the next day? First Super Bowls - The first four Super Bowls were not actually called “Super Bowl.” The first two went by the title of “AFL-NFL World Championship Game.” Impressive, sure, but not nearly as iconic as “Super Bowl,” a term not used until the third game, between the New York Jets and the Baltimore Colts. This was the first game between the champions of the AFL and NFL won by a team (the Jets) from the upstart AFL. Their victory was followed a year later by that of the AFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, a game which many feel cemented the eventual merger between the two leagues.
