Welcome to FirstPoint USA - Cameron Taylor

4 min read

Cameron Taylor is the most recent rugby player to join the ranks here at FirstPoint USA. Cameron hails from Old Coulsdon, South London and previously attended Oasis Academy, Coulsdon. It was here that Cameron cemented his love for the sport.

Since the age of four, Cameron has been playing at Old Caterhamians Rugby Club, Caterham. From beginning the sport at a young age, Cameron has ranked up an impressive number of individual sporting achievements throughout his playing career. Cameron tells us that his favourite memories have not been individual achievements, but have come from being in a team and the experiences he has been able to share; such as tours to Dublin and Cardiff. However, Cameron has said that his favourite sporting memory to date would have to be the last season of rugby he and his team played. Stating that it stood out above the rest as the team played at an outstanding level throughout the season, and the team really enjoyed themselves as they were able to play alongside their friends all season.

We asked Cameron what makes him want to go out and study in the states…

“What a tough question to answer, well to be really honest, after telling people about this opportunity, one reoccurring answer I got is “Cameron that would suit you”. I love America and it has always been a dream of mine to be a student out there. The chance to sign up with FirstPoint USA and the prospect of being in another country excites me so much; it was too good a chance to turn down.”

Cameron tells us there are a number of things he is looking forward to about becoming a student athlete. Being able to play rugby every day and the chance to develop as a player, as well as a person, is certainly one. Also, Cameron states he is excited to meet new people, make new friends, and have a fantastic experience.

Often we ask our clients to tell us who their top three sportspeople of all time are. Cameron had this to say…

“George Gregan- This may not be everyone's first choice of someone that is inspirational to them but he is to me just because I have grown up watching rugby and he was always someone who stood out for me. His style of play and just the way he played the game with such precision is inspiring to me.

Manny Pacquiao- Again not always the most obvious of sportsmen, but he has taught me that no matter where you come from, or what you started with, you can strive to be up there with the best. Due to his background, growing up in difficult situations and living on not much at all, Pacquiao then went on to become a world class boxer fighting the greatest in the game.

Johnny Sexton- This man was again a big influence to me, as he was the man who really drove me to become an improved stand-off. After watching the way he plays, I do believe that my style of play has been influenced by Sexton, and watching him battle through injury to still come out on top and to become one of the best 10s in the world is yet again astounding.”

Finally, we asked Cameron where he pictures himself being in 10 years time. He tells us he would still like to be playing rugby, and be in a job that makes him happy.
