Manny Awuku of Hornchurch, Essex, United Kingdom, has signed with the Ancilla College men's soccer team for the 2011 season.
Awuku is a 6'3" center forward and is the second English-based player to sign with the Chargers this season, joining fellow Englishman Michael Peake.
"From the first moment I watched Manny, I was very impressed," said Ancilla men's soccer coach James Drzewiecki. "He's not just a big body up top. He's a truly impressive talent who can make a major impact at this level. He can hold up play incredibly well and has the ability to absolutely dominate the score sheet. We're counting on him to make a major difference for us in the upcoming season."
Awuku currently plays at the semi-pro level for Bealonians FC in the London Alliance U18 League where he helped his side place second in the table with a record of 7-1-3. He scored a hat trick in the county cup final, helping Bealonians claim a 6-1 victory. He also helped the team finish runner-up in the Alliance cup final.
Prior to this season, Awuku spent nine years with Tigers JFC, finishing as the top scorer each season. In the 2008/2009 campaign, Awuku led Tigers with 35 goals in 31 appearances. In 2009/2010, he improved on that mark, scoring a personal best 49 goals on the year.
Over the course of his youth career with Tigers, Awuku earned trials with famed English clubs Leyton Orient and Fulham, and also garnered interest from Charlton Athletic and Tottenham Hotspur. During his time with the club, Awuku helped Tigers reach seven cup finals in nine seasons.
In addition to soccer, Awuku is also an active participant in rugby, badminton, and track and field.
"The reason I chose Ancilla is because out of all the other offers, this was the place I thought I could develop as a player and a person," said Awuku.
