New York City could very well be featured as one the top cities in the U.S for sports lovers, from the sheer amount of historic sports venues located there!
Visitors and locals to the Big Apple are spoilt for choice in terms of the number of different sports events to attend in the city...from the iconic New York Yankees baseball team to the famous New York Marathon, there's plenty going on for sports lovers of all kinds!
The New York City metropolitan area has nine teams in the four major North American professional sports leagues, each of which is based in the city.

Baseball is the cities' most followed sport and there have been 14 World series championship series between NYC teams, in matchups called Subway Series. New York is one of only two cities in the US (Chicago being the other) to have two baseball teams - the New York Yankees and the New York Mets.
NY Yankees - Yankee Stadium
The New York Yankees; the biggest team, and possibly the biggest sporting obsession in NYC. The Yankees moved from their original stadium to their new stadium in 2009 and won the World Series in the same year. For many New York baseball fans, the most fierce rivalry in North American professional sports is between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
New York Mets
The Mets (or the 'Amazins' as they are referred to by their fans) are based in Queens, and play in the East Division of the National League.
American Football is the city's second most followed sport and the city is represented in the NFL by the New York Jets & the New York Giants.
New York Jets & New York Giants - MetLife Stadium
Both the Jets and the Giants share the MetLife Stadium, which will also host the 2012 SuperBowl XLVIII. The Jets play in the Eastern Division of the AFC, in the NFL and the Giants are the only surviving team of the five which joined the NFL in 1925. The Giants are also the most successful in NFL history, with 7 titles.
New York Rangers - Madison Square Gardens
The NY Rangers play in the National Hockey League, and are one of the oldest teams in the league having being founded in 1926.
New York Knicks, Brooklyn Jets & New York Liberty - Rucker Park
The city's national basketball association teams are the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks, and the womens team is the New York Liberty. Rucker Park in Harlem is a celebrated court where many professional athletes play in the summer league.
New York Red Bulls
New York is represented in Major League Soccer by the New York Red Bulls. The team got their name after being sold to Red Bull in 2006. In addition to the Red Bulls, the city was also home to the New York Cosmos, arguably the most popular American soccer team ever and known for fielding some of the world's greatest players including Pele and Franz Beckenbauer.
Soccer, as in the rest of the US is rapidly growing in popularity.
US Open - Arthur Ashe Stadium
Based in Flushing Meadows in Queens, the US Open is not only one of the oldest Tennis tournaments in the world, but one of the four Grand Slam tournaments on the tour. The Arthur Ashe Stadium seats 22,547.
Running : New York Marathon
The New York Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the world, in terms of competitors. It has taken place every year since 1970, and runs through each of the five boroughs of New York.
