College Focus - The University of Miami

2 min read
One of the biggest universities of the Sunshine State with a current population of over 16,000, the University of Miami is located on a beautiful 453-acre campus in the city of Coral Gables. It offers one of the best college football teams in the nation and a host of modern facilities, ensuring students feel at home and able to reach their full potential. Sport is incredibly important and a clear focus of this university. The school’s athletic teams are the Miami Hurricanes, nicknamed the “Canes”, and they compete in the NCAA Division I. Their football team has been named national champion five times across the past three decades, and previous members of the Hurricanes football program have gone on to become NFL players and even members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In addition to this, Miami has an incredible variety of new and state of the art facilities. Their Alex Rodriguez at Mark Light Field, named after the Yankees player gave a generous donation, was renovated in 2009 and now provides a home for their successful baseball program. Not to be outdone, their football team recently signed a 25-year contract allowing them to play their home games at the New Miami Stadium, the venue set to host the SuperBowl in 2020. The facilities are just as up to date and modern when it comes to classrooms. Under the presidency of Donna Shalala who assumed the role in 2001, the university has built new libraries, dormitories and classroom buildings, among others, which has had a massive impact in increasing student and academic quality across the campus. Clearly, student interest is at the heart of Miami. By introducing things like greater gender equality in their athletic department – meaning that female students have a wider variety of sports to choose from – they have managed to engage students and broaden their horizons. Because of this, their graduates have gone on to do wonderful things in their chosen fields, after being enriched by their time at UM. FirstPointUSA clients currently at University of Miami are soccer players Emily Auld (former Arsenal Ladies FC) and Maisie Baker (Former Aston Villa Ladies FC) Both have enjoyed life as a student athlete and former England international, David Beckham, had the pleasure of meeting Maisie on campus when he toured their soccer facilities.
