What Does a FirstPoint USA Soccer Scholarship Trial Look Like?

5 min read

With the new football season firmly underway, our specialist FirstPoint USA soccer scholarship trial events are back and better than ever across the UK and Ireland. Providing a gateway to the beginning of an exciting soccer scholarship journey, our soccer trials are the perfect opportunity for you to put yourself in the spotlight and showcase your skills in the hope of securing a playing contract over in the United States.

The Trial Event:

Our inclusive football trial events are carefully planned and coached to allow young sportsmen and women of all levels of ability to exhibit their athletic talent and skills to our highly experienced scouting teams and provide an open platform to learn more about the life-changing opportunities that a college scholarship in the US can offer. As a student-athlete in America, you’ll have access to some of the very best educational and athletic facilities on the planet and enjoy one of the most unique experiences that come along with being a full-time student-athlete.

The Format:

The trial is made up of various stages, all of which have been designed to maximise the value you gain from the time spent with our UEFA-licensed coaching and admissions team.

A typical soccer trial format will look something like this:

  • An introductory presentation delivered by our specialist sports consultancy team, designed to inform you of the vast opportunities that present themselves to US college athletes both on and off the pitch.
  • The presentation will then be followed by a warm-up session and introduction to the format of the trial, including each of the skill-based drills, physical assessments, and how you’ll be coached throughout the event.
  • Next, you’ll take part in our professionally planned position-specific drills with our dedicated coaching team, designed to not only evaluate your skills and ability relative to the position you play but also to provide education and feedback on how you can improve certain aspects of your game to continue developing as a player.
  • You’ll then re-join the rest of the group for a set of small-sided games to assess your individual ability on the pitch during a real-time game simulation, and also to evaluate how you operate as a team player, for things like off-ball movement, communication, work ethic and your willingness to work towards the collective makeup of the team.
  • Finally, you’ll receive feedback as part of our review process, detailing how you performed on the day and how we evaluate your suitability to potentially move forward in the scholarship process.

On the day of the event, you will have the chance to ask questions and talk to some of our experienced former student-athletes about their own time over in the States to get a feel for what a typical day in the life would be like on campus. Our specialist sports consultants will also conduct a short presentation for you and your parents to explore the finer details of being a student-athlete at a US college or university and what it truly means to be an ambassador for both the men’s and women’s sports community at that institution.
