The Final Countdown: Pre-Departure Guidance for Incoming Freshman Student-Athletes

5 min read

Your dream of becoming a collegiate student-athlete in the United States is about to become a reality, marking the start of an extraordinary, life-defining adventure. Years of early morning practices, gruelling training sessions, and dedicated late-night studying have all led to this moment.

As you prepare to step onto campus, join your new teammates, and compete on the big stage, it is completely normal to feel a mix of sky-high excitement and a few nervous butterflies. You are embarking on a journey that will shape your character, build lifelong connections, and push your limits both in the classroom and on the field.

However, transitioning to a new country and a demanding student-athlete lifestyle requires smart preparation. To help you navigate the logistics, packing, and planning before you board your flight, the FirstPoint USA team has gathered our top insights, tips, and an essential checklist so you can step off the plane with complete confidence.

Phase 1: The Essential Checklist

Before you head to the airport, ensure these critical steps are checked off your list:

  • Visa & Embassy Preparation: If you haven’t attended your embassy appointment yet, check in with your FirstPoint USA consultant for a preparation session. We will help you understand exactly what documents to bring, what questions you might be asked, and what to expect during the interview.
  • Coordinate with Your Coach: Contact your college coach before booking your flights. Many fall-season sports—such as Soccer, Rugby, Cross Country, Women’s Volleyball, and Field Hockey—require athletes to arrive a few days or weeks before classes begin for pre-season camps and orientation.
  • Share Your Itinerary: Once flights are booked, send your coach your arrival airport, date, and time. They may meet you personally, arrange for a graduate assistant to collect you, or connect you with teammates arriving at the same airport.
  • Health Insurance Check: University requirements vary—some include insurance in your scholarship, while others mandate a specific campus plan. Ensure both you and your parents have digital and paper copies of your policy available.  FirstPoint USA can advise on common student insurers if required.

Hand Luggage Only: Keep your passport (with visa) and your physical I-20 document in your backpack, not in your checked bags. You will need these immediately at US immigration. Also pack any medications, phone, chargers, a power bank, a US plug adapter, and some cash.

Phase 2: Packing Smart & Logistics

When it comes to packing, the golden rule is less is more. Your university will often provide training and competition apparel, and you can always bring more gear back with you after the Christmas holidays.

What to Pack:

  • Sport-Specific Gear: Shin guards, track spikes, tennis rackets, hockey sticks, mouthguards etc. Ensure oversized equipment is pre-booked with the airline in a protective case.
  • Academics & Tech: Your laptop, chargers, and comfortable clothing for classes.
  • Climate Considerations: You will likely arrive in the heat of August, but the semester runs through December. Pack layers to prepare for significantly colder temperatures later in the term.
  • Any personal medications or inhalers.

What to Buy There:

Your dorm room will come equipped with the basics: a bed, mattress, desk, chair, and blinds. Plan a day-one trip to Walmart or Target with your new teammates to buy your pillows, bedding, towels, toiletries, and room essentials.

Tech & Banking Set-Up:

  • Mobile Phone: Keep your current phone but switch to a US eSIM package (such as Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile, or Metro) for affordable US data and calling.
  • Banking: Avoid heavy foreign transaction fees by setting up digital multi-currency accounts like Wise or Revolut to access your money easily.

Phase 3: Golden Rules from the Experts

With 25 years of experience supporting international student-athletes, our team has gathered insights from thousands of alumni. To maximize your US college experience, we recommend living by these our student-athlete ethos:

  • Be coachable, and be a great teammate.
  • Work hard athletically, but work just as hard academically to stay eligible and excel in the classroom.
  • Communicate honestly and regularly with coaches and support staff.
  • Never hesitate to ask for help.
  • Stay connected with your family back home.

Students who embrace this philosophy consistently create the best opportunities for themselves, both in the classroom and in their sport.
