FirstPoint USA, the global leader in US collegiate sports scholarship and university placement services, has named renowned international coach Spencer Henderson as its new Director of Golf.
With a career in the industry spanning more than a quarter of a century, Henderson is one of Europe’s most respected junior golf coaches. His extensive resume includes high-profile leadership positions with national governing bodies across Scotland, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.
During his initial tenure with the Scottish Golf Union working alongside former National Coach Ian Rae, Henderson led the country to a European Youth Team Championship title, mentoring future DP World Tour winners such as Richie Ramsay and Scott Jamieson. He was also an integral part of the coaching setup that secured Scotland’s historic victory over a stacked US trio at the World Amateur Team Championship in Australia—a team featuring FirstPoint alumnus Callum Macaulay and Gavin Dear.
In 2008, Henderson was recruited by the Turkish Golf Federation to serve as its first ever National Golf Coach, establishing a successful talent pathway, before taking on a similar pioneering position with the Azerbaijan Golf Federation.
He returned to Scottish Golf in 2015 as National Junior Coach before taking the reins as National Men’s Coach four years ago. Under his guidance, the men’s squad achieved an impressive seventh-place finish at the World Amateur Team Championship. That lineup featured current US college standouts Nial Sheils Donegan (University of North Carolina) and Connor Graham (Northwestern University), alongside Northwestern graduate and DP World Tour rookie Cameron Adam.
Most recently, Henderson has been coaching talented juniors at former Open Champion Paul Lawrie’s Academy in Aberdeen while continuing his mentoring role with the Barrie Douglas Foundation.

In his new capacity, Henderson reunites with former Scottish Golf colleague Ross Duncan, who leads FirstPoint’s marketing team. FirstPoint continues to grow its presence in elite junior golf, having previously sponsored the China Junior Golf Masters, partnered with both Scottish and English Golf, and hosted international events at premier venues such as Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
College golf truly is the gateway to the top tiers of the professional game. Scottie Scheffler (University of Texas), Tiger Woods (Stanford) and John Rahm (Arizona State) all cut their teeth on the collegiate circuit, while two of Europe’s leading lights - Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech) and Viktor Hovland (Oklahoma State) – are recent graduates, both of whom reached number one in the world amateur rankings during their university careers. Indeed, around 65% of professionals currently playing the PGA Tour used to play collegiate golf in the States.
The standard of competition is fierce at the top levels of NCAA men’s golf, with players enjoying the opportunity to compete against the best in the world, on world-class courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Pebbles Beach and Augusta National, to name but a few.
The average roster size of a golf team is 10, with the number of scholarships available per team ranging from 4.5 in DI to 8 in NJCAA, while there are more than 1300 institutions across the US who feature golf within their athletic programs
